An abscess (abscessus) refers to any acute inflammatory condition that develops in a specific delineated area and is accompanied by the formation of pus (purulent tooth). Every abscess develops on the basis of symptom-free, chronic inflammation, which can be identified during focal examination. If chronic inflammation becomes active, it enters the acute phase. The cause of the process can be a transient weakening of the immune system, stress, hormonal changes, or other factors.
Dental abscess comes with intense symptoms such as pain, redness, swelling, and warmth in the inflamed area. Due to tension, pus attempts to drain spontaneously. If successful, it breaks through the surface somewhere with a fistula opening.
Recognizing and treating inflammation in a timely manner saves the patient from immense pain and discomfort. Treating inflammation in the chronic, relatively symptom-free phase is a very gratifying task because it prevents the formation of abscesses. The treatment of inflammations is always targeted, aiming to eliminate the underlying causes, but always begins with the management of acute, painful symptoms. The first step is always to drain the accumulated inflammatory fluid in the abscess, often accompanied by antibiotics. Only after the reduction of very intense acute symptoms can we address the nature of the inflammation. If the abscess has developed on the basis of periodontal inflammation, then stopping periodontal inflammation is the primary goal. If we are dealing with inflammation originating from the dental pulp, then the treatment goal should be to address the pulp inflammation and decay (root canal treatment). Treatment of the abscessed tooth can be done through treatment of gum disease, and as a last resort, extraction of the abscessed tooth may be the solution.
In summary, the most ideal treatment for acute inflammations is to prevent their occurrence altogether. This is possible by recognizing and eliminating chronic inflammations in a timely manner. The perfect elimination of chronic inflammations can only be ensured through regular dental screenings (dental focal investigation) and thorough dental X-ray examinations.
