Simple Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom tooth removal can be done through simple extraction or surgery. Naturally, this decision is made by our expert colleagues, based on the position of the affected tooth and several other factors.

If the tooth is visible from the gum and the crown of the tooth is intact, a simple wisdom tooth extraction can resolve the issue. This is usually possible with upper wisdom teeth located in the upper jaw, making the procedure generally easier in such cases.

Upper Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Upper wisdom tooth extraction refers to the removal of the third molars in the upper jaw. It is important to distinguish these teeth from their counterparts in the lower jaw because the bone structure in the upper jaw differs significantly from that in the lower jaw.

The structure of the upper jaw is much softer and more spongy, so the upper wisdom tooth is generally easier to mobilize. During the extraction of an upper wisdom tooth, different tools and forceps are used to ensure the tooth is moved at the optimal angle.

Lower Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Unlike the upper jaw, the lower jaw has a harder, less flexible structure due to its lower spongy content. As a result, the lower wisdom tooth is more difficult to extract. Consequently, complications and side effects are more common with lower wisdom tooth extraction.

How to Prepare for Wisdom Tooth Extraction

  • Before tooth extraction, eat properly to help maintain optimal blood sugar levels.
  • Continue taking your regular medications unless otherwise instructed by the oral surgeon during the consultation.
  • Arrive well-rested.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process

1. Consultation: Wisdom tooth extraction can be performed after the consultation, preliminary oral examination, and X-rays are completed.

2. Medication: In the case of an inflamed wisdom tooth, we may decide to start antibiotic treatment beforehand, allowing the extraction to be performed under inflammation-free conditions.

3. Anesthesia: The tooth extraction is performed under local anesthesia, starting with numbing the mucous membrane using a special gel. This minimizes the sensation of the injection, which is barely felt or not at all. Numbness sets in within a few minutes, after which the wisdom tooth extraction can begin.

During wisdom tooth extraction

4. Tooth Mobilization: Once numbness is achieved, the tooth is carefully loosened from its position using appropriate tools. The forceps and elevators used are always sterile instruments. If the tooth is difficult to mobilize and its anatomy or root structure permits, tooth sectioning (dissection) may be considered. In this case, the tooth is removed in two or more pieces after the separate sections are mobilized.

During the extraction, a dull pressure or stretching sensation may be felt, but sharp pain should not occur. Additional anesthesia may be needed if necessary.

5. Suturing: Stitches are placed after the wisdom tooth removal if necessary.

After wisdom tooth extraction

After upper wisdom tooth extraction

After the extraction of an upper wisdom tooth, healing often occurs unnoticed and without symptoms. This is due to the softer structure of the upper jaw, with its spongy bone composition.

After the anesthesia wears off, there is a lower chance of complications such as pain, swelling, or sensitivity following the extraction of an upper third molar, but their occurrence cannot be completely ruled out, and this is entirely normal.

After lower wisdom tooth extraction

Unlike the upper wisdom tooth extraction, unpleasant symptoms occur more frequently after the removal of a lower wisdom tooth.

Stitches removal

If stitches were used to close the area, they will need to be removed, similar to wisdom tooth surgery. Several things need to be observed after the removal of a lower wisdom tooth, just as with a simple tooth extraction. You can read more about these details on the post-extraction care page.

What should I eat after wisdom tooth extraction?

The dietary and beverage guidelines after the removal of an 8th tooth are similar to those for general tooth extractions. Eating after wisdom tooth extraction is possible under certain conditions. Pain After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Complications are more common after the removal of the third molar than with other teeth, especially in the lower jaw area. Pain is often radiating, and ear pain can also occur after wisdom tooth extraction.

After a tooth extraction, you may feel sensitivity in the neighboring tooth for a few days. You can read more about pain after tooth extraction in our related professional article.

Healing of wisdom tooth extraction

After the removal of stitches, the gum where the wisdom tooth was extracted is usually fully closed. Despite epithelialization, a noticeable hole at the extraction site is normal. It takes several months for this tissue defect to fill in and smooth out.

The cost of wisdom tooth extraction

The cost of wisdom tooth extraction depends on the difficulty of the procedure. In simple cases, the price of wisdom tooth extraction is similar to that of a general tooth removal, as there is no need for specialized surgical equipment. In more complex cases, where surgical extraction is required, the cost of wisdom tooth extraction is higher.

GYIK - Felső és alsó bölcsességfog húzás gyakori kérdések

Should the wisdom tooth be extracted due to gum inflammation?

Those last molars that cannot erupt properly often cause gingivitis. Removal of these teeth is generally necessary.

Is it simple to extract a wisdom tooth?

Typically, whether the extraction of a wisdom tooth is simple or somewhat more complex depends on its anatomical position. In every case, the procedure is performed under anesthesia, so it is painless.

Does it hurt to remove a wisdom tooth?

Given that the procedure is always performed under anesthesia, it is never painful during the intervention.

How long does pain last after removing a lower wisdom tooth?

Complications after removing a lower wisdom tooth occur more frequently but generally resolve within 3-7 days.

Why should I have my healthy wisdom tooth removed?

In many cases, it is not the decay of the wisdom tooth but its position that justifies its removal. The removal is often done to prevent future problems.

How does the healing process work after removing a lower wisdom tooth?

The healing process and the occurrence of pain and other discomforts after removing a lower third molar can vary individually. The level of pain is often not related to the difficulty of the procedure or the duration spent in the dentist's chair. Sometimes, a very difficult lower tooth extraction heals without complications, while an easy removal of a wisdom tooth can still cause significant discomfort for patients.
