Advantages of dental implants over traditional prosthetics

If you have not yet decided whether to choose an implant borne solution or a traditional dental prosthetic, it may help if we take a look at the advantages of implant tooth replacement and tooth implantation.

1. Bridge or implant: protection of existing teeth

In the case of a missing tooth, when it is possible to perform either a traditional bridge or a dental implant, the question always arises as to what is the advantage of tooth replacement performed with the insertion of a dental implant. The first and most important advantage is the protection of the tissues of the existing, still healthy teeth.

When making a traditional bridge, at least 60% of the crown of the abutment teeth must be drilled and ground in order to create enough space for the thickness of the bridge to be made.

In comparison, after a dental implant, we don't even have to touch the adjacent teeth next to the missing tooth, since the implanted dental restoration will work similarly to your own tooth that was already removed. This is especially true in the case of missing teeth, where fixed dentures can only be made by grinding down many of your own teeth.

2.  Implant = extra pillar: distribution of the masticatory forces

The masticatory muscles are among the most powerful muscles capable of exerting force in the human body. When crafting dental prostheses without implants, the entire chewing force burdens the remaining tooth roots, thus impacting the natural teeth. In extreme cases, this burden exceeds what the tooth can endure under healthy conditions.

On the other hand, after the placement of a dental implant, we can distribute this extremely high force over many more pillars, so we will not overload our own teeth, but can distribute the load of the masticatory organ both on the surface of the dental implant and on the already  existing, natural teeth.

3. The fabrication of fixed dental prostheses in cases of extensive tooth loss

In cases of extensive partial or complete tooth loss without the involvement of additional pillars, only partial dentures, or full dentures can be crafted; a fixed solution is not possible. In such instances, dental implants are the only means to create prostheses that do not require removal even for cleaning purposes, and patients are unable to remove them from their mouths. These dental constructs significantly enhance the quality of life for patients.

4. Versatility - the possibility of combination with multiple types of dental prostheses, offering universal applicability.

Furthermore, one of the advantages of dental implants is that replacing lost natural teeth alongside an existing implant-supported crown is much simpler. After removing the crown of the existing implant, the implant itself can be universally utilized as a prosthetic root to support a bridge, cantilever bridge, or denture, whether alongside one or multiple other dental implants.

5. It is also suitable for supporting removable dental prostheses

In certain cases, dental implants can be utilized not only for fixed but also for supporting removable dentures. In such instances, the advantage of dental implants is that they stabilize the removable dentures, preventing them from rocking or shifting out of place. Following dental implantation, even complete dentures can be made stable.

Disadvantages of dental implants

Like everything else, dental implantation also comes with its drawbacks. Besides its cost implications, one disadvantage of dental implants is the longer duration required for completion. This is because after dental implantation, a healing period is necessary.

Another drawback is that some individuals are reluctant to undergo surgical procedures. Sedation, or general anesthesia can offer a solution to alleviate the discomfort associated with the surgical intervention.

What is the best dental implant for me and what should I pay attention to?

Once you have decided on dental implantation, there are several important factors to consider that can assist you in selecting the type of implant. Our professional team would like to draw your attention to the following aspects:

Type of dental implants

It can be challenging to navigate: Types of Dental Implants

There are hundreds of types of dental implants available on the market commercially. They can vary based on design or manufacturing technology, as well as in their material composition, shape, size, surface treatment, the configuration of their implant head connection, or other characteristics.

Although navigating through the wide range of products can be challenging, there are certain professional principles that are essential to consider for the successful, long-term stability, and inflammation-free maintenance of dental implants, as well as for avoiding post-implantation inflammation. With knowledge of these principles, the options for selection can be narrowed down.

Dental implant material should be titanium, reinforced titanium, or zirconium

The material of most dental implants is pure titanium, but there are premium manufacturers that use a special, reinforced material (ZrTi, e.g. Straumann Roxolid). RECOMMENDED

There is also a pure zirconium (zirconium dioxide) implant available. However, there are currently no long-term experiences with these solutions, and the possibilities are significantly limited when creating dental prostheses. RECOMMENDED WITH LIMITATIONS

Shape of a dental implant

The shape of the dental implant should be screw-shaped

Generally, the shape of the dental implant is helical, similar to the shape of the tooth root. RECOMMENDED

There are variations with different shapes available, but it is important to emphasize that only the screw-shaped dental implant can be considered a safe and widely recognized product by the profession. NOT RECOMMENDED

The neck's connection should be a conical connection

The quality of the connection between the head and the body of the dental implant is of utmost importance for bone stability following the intervention. Micro-movements occurring during chewing can result in the migration of bacteria to varying degrees, leading to slow resorption of the bone around the neck of the prosthetic root. The smaller these movements are, the more stable the bone level, highlighting its crucial role in the long term.

This stability is best facilitated by a conical connection, as it allows for a tight connection between the head and the body. Following dental implantation, this ensures a stable connection between the dental prosthesis and the prosthetic root. RECOMMENDED

In the case of a traditional connection, the two surfaces meet in a flat manner, thus allowing for greater bacterial leakage. NOT RECOMMENDED

Dental implant surface

Surface of a dental implant

There are differences in the surface treatment of titanium among manufacturers. This is the property that can best aid and accelerate healing and osseointegration following dental implantation.

The manufacturing process of this part, the "recipe," is typically shrouded in secrecy. Similarly, the procedure and design of the dental implant are unique. Modern surfaces ARE RECOMMENDED!

Which implant is the best?

Dental implants must be clinically tested

Very few manufacturers can afford to conduct a series of clinical trials lasting several years before placing their products on the market. These studies play a crucial role in the long-term success and reliable use of the products. ONLY CERTIFIED PRODUCTS ARE RECOMMENDED!

Of course, based on the combination of the mentioned properties, products can be categorized into different tiers. Pricing also reflects the quality of the product.

Is there an ultimately best dental implant?

In reality, it is impossible to declare any dental implant as the best dental implant. However, there are many systems that provide reliable and stable results over the long term, whether it's for replacing a single missing tooth (such as a broken tooth) or for replacing the teeth lost in an entire jawbone. Therefore, dental implants can offer a universal, potentially lifelong solution for supporting dental prostheses.

In summary, it can be stated that in the case of an ideal bone supply and the absence of any other complications, any family labeled as RECOMMENDED with the respective attributes can be confidently utilized within all systems applied in our practice. However, it is prudent to thoroughly discuss with our specialists the treatment-modifying effects of local bone availability and general health-related risk factors, and based on this understanding, select the implant system that is most suitable for us. It is advisable to plan ahead when choosing dental implants, as such interventions are planned for the long term.

Opting for cheaper dental implants may ultimately incur higher costs later on

Before making a decision, it is worthwhile to consider what makes a product cheaper. Are you simply paying for marketing, or are you paying for the reputation of the manufacturing company when choosing the more expensive option? Is it worth choosing a dental practice based on where dental implants are the cheapest or where dental implant procedures are on promotion?

In our experience, in most cases, a higher price reflects higher value, which can pay off in the long run. A cheap, low-quality implant can lead to many complications and additional expenses later on, which can also impact our health. Removing a dental implant involves damaging surrounding tissues, so it's worth thinking ahead and making a good decision in time.

A moderately priced, good value-for-money implant can also be excellent; it's just a matter of finding the right product and the right specialist who can impeccably place it.

Dental implant prices in Hungary

In terms of dental implant pricing, therefore, it depends on several factors. The cost of dental implants may be more favorable if we choose a product from a cheaper manufacturer. However, when opting for premium products, we should expect higher costs.

The price of dental implants only forms a portion of the total treatment cost, as it combines the cost of the dental prosthesis and the dental implant. It is worth considering which dental implant we choose because once the dental implant is placed, it cannot be easily modified.

The prices for dental implantation are located at the bottom of the page, and they can also be found on the dental prices page.

The professional leadership at Helvetic Clinics obviously cannot allow the utilization of any dental implantation system that poses even a small risk during patient care. Whichever product our patients choose, they can be completely assured that we will implant a safe, high success-rate, long-term stable solution.
