General anesthesia in dentistry: When is it necessary, how do we perform it?

Dental General Anesthesia

Dental procedures often trigger varying degrees of fear and anxiety in most people. Some can manage these feelings relatively easily, while others find it much more emotionally taxing to sit in the dental chair. Of course, we do everything possible to alleviate these fears, but there is an increasing demand from patients for a realistic alternative to traditional dental treatments. Dental general anesthesia can offer a solution in such cases.

When is general anesthesia necessary in dentistry?

Dental treatments can be performed under general anesthesia if the patient exhibits any of the following:

  • intense anxiety and fear of dental procedures
  • in cases where the classic doctor-patient cooperation during the procedure is not possible
  • in cases of extreme gag reflex causing nausea during procedures
  • in cases of a prolonged, series of treatments performed simultaneously

Specialist's advice

Anesthesia is commonly used in dentistry. It allows us to perform both simple and more complex procedures that would not be possible without it. The most common indications include extreme dental fear or the treatment of patients with neurological impairments. If you'd like to have your dental procedure performed under general anesthesia, simply schedule a consultation with us.

How is general anesthesia performed?

The anesthesia is always performed with the assistance of a team of anesthesiologists. We only use the most advanced anesthesia machines to ensure the highest level of care for our patients.

During the consultation, we take the patient's medical history both verbally and in writing, record the medications they are taking, and then discuss the necessary dental treatments based on the X-ray images. We establish a diagnosis and create a treatment plan. If there is a request for the procedures to be performed under general anesthesia, we order additional specialist examinations (such as laboratory tests, EKG, etc.) that needs to be performed by the patient. This is a lengthy procedure, so the treatments can not start at the same visit as the consultation.

After the anesthesia, patients will not remember the treatment and will not have unpleasant memories, but any swelling, tension, or pain following the procedures may still occur. Naturally, this can be alleviated and managed with appropriate pain relief medication.

Overall, it can be said that a decision on whether it is possible to perform dental procedures under general anesthesia can only be made after a proper indication and thorough medical examination.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions About General Anesthesia in Dentistry

Is anesthesia necessary during general anesthesia?

During dental general anesthesia, the use of  local anesthetics is necessary for painful procedures, regardless of the fact that the treatment is being done under anesthesia, as pain is still felt during sleep.

Can I go outside after general anesthesia?

After general anesthesia, the medication is still active in your body, so you need to rest and be monitored during the first 6 hours. If you are not coming with a companion, you must be supervised by a nurse, a service that is available upon request.
